WELCOME!

Welcome! I am using this blog to share our family's homeschooling thoughts and experiences.

THIS SCHOOL YEAR (2016-2017): We will be using a variety of different curriculum this year, with Notgrass' Uncle Sam and You as our main History, Bible and Literature focus. Our oldest, EL, is in 12th grade this year, but has special learning needs due to autism. JJ is our youngest, an active boy with Tourette Syndrome. He is in the 8th grade.

Please feel free to follow along....

About Us

Welcome to SONset Academy, the site of our school! We have been a homeschooling family since the Summer of 2005, starting out with our oldest using the Learning to Read program from A.C.E.

In the Fall of 2009, we started using MY FATHER'S WORLD for the majority of our subjects: Bible, History, Science, Music and Art. We began with "Adventures in U.S. History."

YEAR 2010-2011: MFW - Exploring Countries and Cultures  (This is the year I started writing this blog to share our homeschooling efforts with others. If you read these early posts, you will notice I was referring to EL as Roadrunner at that time, and to JJ as Coyote.)

YEAR 2011-2012:  MFW - Creation to the Greeks.
YEAR 2012-2013:  MFW - Rome to the Reformation.
YEAR 2013-2014:  MFW - Exploration to 1850.
YEAR 2014-2015:  MFW - 1850 to MODERN TIMES
YEAR 2015-2016:  MFW - Back to Exploring Countries and Cultures

THIS YEAR (2016-2017):  I wanted us to focus on a year of Government/Civics, so we switched from MFW to NOTGRASS HISTORY. We are using "Uncle Sam and You," which is geared for 5th-8th grade students.

My husband, David, is our Principal. He and I have been married for 24 years. He is very busy working as a Paramedic and as the Director of a nearby ambulance company, but he brings wisdom and insight to our school when he can. He loves his children and desires to be a part of their lives. I know I would have a hard time schooling the children without his support.

I am Victoria - the teacher. My family is very important to me, and I enjoy spending time with them (most of the time). This is our 12th year of homeschooling. I have learned a lot over the years, and still have a long way to go. It has been challenging, but also fun, and I'm glad to have the opportunity to do it.  In my spare time, you can usually find me at the computer where I love to write, keep updated with family and friends, and I also enjoy researching genealogy/family history.

Our daughter, EL, is 18, and is in 12th grade this year. You will rarely see her without a hat. She loves to wear them. She also has quite a collection of stuffed dogs and musical toys. Her favorites are singing and dancing animals. Plus, she enjoys drawing, listening to music, and watching movies. Her autism brings some special learning needs with it, but she is a hard worker and continues to learn and grow. She is a special blessing from Heaven.

JJ is 13, and in 8th grade this year. He is an active, yet sensitive, boy with an interest in super heroes, science fiction movies (especially Star Wars), and Legos. He also likes to create stories, perform magic tricks, and play the drums. He can be funny, sweet, imaginative, and a good helper. A mild case of Tourette Syndrome and OCD has caused him some struggles, but we are helping him work through them.
