WELCOME!

Welcome! I am using this blog to share our family's homeschooling thoughts and experiences.

THIS SCHOOL YEAR (2017-2018): Our oldest child, EL, finished her formal education in May, so we only have our son, JJ to school this year. We intend to homeschool him through High School, and will be using a variety of different curriculum choices to complete this goal.

Please feel free to follow along....

About Us

Welcome to SONset Academy, the site of the Stankus family school! We have been a homeschooling family since the Summer of 2005, starting out with our oldest using the Learning to Read program from A.C.E.

The Fall of 2009 was the year we started using MY FATHER'S WORLD for the majority of our subjects: Bible, History, Science, Music and Art. We began with "Adventures in U.S. History," then went to Exploring Countries and Cultures in 2010. That was the year I started writing this blog to share our homeschooling efforts with others. (If you read these early posts, you will notice I was referring to EL as Roadrunner at that time, and to JJ as Coyote.) In 2011, we used Creation to the Greeks, then Rome to the Reformation in 2012. Next came Exploration to 1850 (2013), followed by 1850 to MODERN TIMES (2014). Then, we went back to Exploring Countries and Cultures in 2015.

Last year (2016-2017), we switched from My Father's World to NOTGRASS HISTORY and focused on a year of Government/Civics by using "Uncle Sam and You." That was EL's Senior year, and JJ's 8th grade year.

THIS YEAR (2017-2018): EL has graduated, so we only have JJ to do official school with. We are using an eclectic mix of different curriculum, including the following:

My husband, David, is our "Principal." He and I have been married for 25 years. He is very busy working as the Director of a nearby ambulance company, but he brings wisdom and insight to our school when he can. He loves his children and desires to be a part of their lives. I know I would have a hard time schooling the children without his support.

I am Victoria - the teacher. My family is very important to me, and I enjoy spending time with them (most of the time). This is our 13th year of formal homeschooling. I have learned a lot over the years, and still have more to learn (I never stop learning!) Homeschooling has been very challenging at times, but also fun, and I'm thankful I have the opportunity to do it.  In my spare time, you can usually find me at the computer where I love to write, keep updated with family and friends, and I also enjoy researching genealogy/family history.

Our daughter, EL, is 19 and finished her formal education in May 2017. Her autism brings some special learning needs with it, but she is a hard worker and continues to learn and grow. She is keeping busy these days by doing various chores around the house, completing pages in a workbook, reading, drawing, listening to music, pinning favorite videos on Pinterest, and volunteering at the local Senior Center. She is a special blessing from Heaven.

JJ is 14, and in 9th grade this year. He is an active teen with an interest in super heroes, science fiction movies (especially Star Wars), swimming, and bike riding. He also still enjoys building with Legos, performing magic tricks and playing the drums. He can be funny, sweet, imaginative, and a good helper. A mild case of Tourette Syndrome and some learning delays have caused him some struggles, but we are helping him work through those.
